Foreign Direct Investment - Gap Analysis Study
Red Deer Regional Economic Development conducted a GAP analysis of foreign direct investment in the area. The goal of the study was to gain insight into the region’s business environment and form a strategy to target foreign companies in industries that would thrive here, with reasonable development. Manufacturing, logistics and transportation, and the agri-food industry were three sectors identified in the study as key focuses. The FDI study determined that significant potential exists for foreign investment in the Red Deer Region.
The Red Deer Region has many strong characteristics that national and international businesses would find attractive. The region is ranked as the seventh lowest cost location to conduct business in Western Canada, according to KPMG’s 2008 Competitive Alternatives: KMPG’s guide to international business location. Overall, Red Deer was 2.2% more cost effective for business than the Canadian average and 2.8% more cost effective than the United States. International business needs to be made more aware of the Red Deer Corridor.
Investment Attraction is one of four areas of focus for Red Deer Regional Economic Development. Through investment attraction, business retention and expansion, communications and marketing, and labour force attraction, retention, and development, the strategic alliance strives to create a competitive, diverse and supportive business environment in the Red Deer Region for 2009 and into the future.

Rural Development Initative
In July, Red Deer Regional Economic Development (RDRED) received news regarding funding through the Rural Development Initiative (RDI).
Through RDI funding, the Red Deer Region will be able to execute an effective investment attraction strategy. With the groundwork laid in terms of research, marketing materials and leads generation, RDRED will be able to use RDI funding to bring the plan into action. This will involve hiring a consultant, who will target foreign companies with customized information and on-going communication about advantages of relocating to the Red Deer Region.
The RDI funds provide RDRED with a platform to showcase the Red Deer Region to a global market of opportunities and positively influence a range of industries. RDRED takes a pro-active stance to foster community growth and diversification by carrying out an investment strategy that puts the Red Deer Region on the economic and investment radar.
